Backpacking Camp Information

Join us on the trail for one of Alberta’s coolest Backpacking camps. This adventure is for those wanting to explore the backcountry via backpack and hiking boots—it’s a backcountry tripping experience combining camping and hiking mixed together with a whole lotta’ fun!

Our camp staff will provide expertise, experience and some equipment for a fantastic backpacking adventure. You will spend most of your time taking in all that the Castle Mountain Wilderness has to offer. We will visit alpine valleys, waterfalls and lakes. Scramble up hiking trails and ramble along the ridges of the great divide!

This program is for youth ages 11 to 17, who have an interest in getting into the backcountry under their own feet power. We encourage youth who have experienced our residential summer camp program who are looking for a new and exciting adventure to take part in this program.

Camp Highlights

Dates, Costs & Itinerary

Session 1
July 14 - 19, 2019 | One Week | $599

Session 1 is 6 days, 5 nights which includes two nights at Camp Impeesa in our platform tent village and 3 nights in the backcountry. You can expect to be in the hiking and exploring each day except for the day of arrival and departure from camp. This trip is recommended for those campers who have not had much backpacking experience.

August 4 - 16, 2019 | Two Weeks | $899

Session 2 is 13 days, 12 nights which includes two - four nights at Camp Impeesa in our platform tent village and 8 -10 nights in the backcountry. You can expect to be hiking and moving camp each day with at least one or two base camp nights. This trip is recommended for those campers who are looking for more time in the backcountry

  • Sunday
  • Arrive at camp, settle into your shared wall tent in our summer camp tent village, swim test in the lake, as a group set expectations, goals and plan your week with your trip counselors, review safety and risk for the trip, check your gear & pack bags, campfire.

  • Monday
  • After a hot breakfast you will work with your trip counselors to learn all about backpacking safety and risk in the backcountry, how to pack and load your backpack, review maps and route plan , divide group gear and trail meals, and start your hike out of Camp Impeesa to the backcountry.

  • Tuesday to Thursday
  • Each day once meals and camp chores have been completed you will pack up your gear for the day, review the route for the day and head out on the trail to explore the area. In the evening you will have a chance to talk about what you want the next day to be like and where you want to go. Evenings can also include camp craft, campfire and storytelling, fishing, checking out the stars, creek hikes and sharing of fellowship.

  • Thursday to Friday
  • You will have your final day on the trail and head back to Camp Impeesa. While at camp you will have the opportunity to participate in the many activities offered at camp, go to the final campfire of the week, enjoy a hot shower and dinner in our dining hall. Friday afternoon it will be time to head back home to share stories of your grand adventure.

    During the 13 day trip you will follow a similar itinerary except you will spend most of your time on the trail in the backcountry.

    What's included in the Trip?

    Campers will be provided with all food and trail snacks while at camp and in the backcountry, plus tents and group related camping/cooking gear. . Two camp trip counselors will share in your experience to facilitate your adventure. All campers must provide their own properly fitted backpacking pack, hiking boots and all other personal equipment.

    Your registration package contains all of the information you will need to get ready for the trip. We include information on transportation to camp, details on what personal gear you should and should not bring, a note on risk, a list of gear, forms regarding medical and dietary needs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    No, campers must bring their own backpack that has been properly sized and fitted to the individual. We recommend checking the local scout shop in Calgary or Edmonton where they can help you choose the proper backpack best suited to your camper. You can also seek out an outdoor pro at your local gear shop. Another option is to rent and most city centers have a number of outdoor gear rental locations available.

    Yes, you are welcome to bring along the equipment you are used to. Please note that campers do share sleeping accommodations with one or two other campers for tents.

    Yes, 1 - 4 nights at the main camp — Camp Impeesa, then multiple nights in the backcountry in tents, then back to Camp Impeesa for the final night.

    It’s a mixed bag of terrain, no highway or paved road.It’ll be bumpy and smooth, flat and steep, twisty and straight.See a pattern? ;-)

    A good general level of fitness is needed, but we will take frequent breaks and pace the group accordingly.Every group has faster and slower hikers, but everyone ends up at the same destination. If you’ve never backpacked before we recommend taking part in the 6 day program and all participants must be able to carry their own fully weighted backpack.

    The backpacking camp helps develop many skills.We’ll cover trip planning and packing, care and maintenance of gear, multi day backcountry tripping, trail exploration in different types of terrain, safety on the trail, leave not trace, food and hygiene, and backcountry living skills.
